  • Manchester United go to Stamford Bridge on Saturday with their manager answering questions about whether he will keep his job. Michael Carrick said this week he does not need "any assurances from anyone" after Sunday's home defeat by Bournemouth. His side kicks off against Chelsea at 12:30 p.m. UK time on TNT Sports, the first match of the Premier League weekend.

The week has been about Bruno Fernandes as much as Carrick. The captain was dropped against Bournemouth after appearing to criticize the tactics in United's 4-1 Champions League loss at Como. The two have since held clear-the-air talks, and Carrick said Fernandes is "fully committed to this football club." He would not say whether Fernandes will wear the armband Saturday.

United's injury list is long. Benjamin Sesko will be out for what Carrick called "a long period of time" with a shin problem. Luke Shaw, Manuel Ugarte and Patrick Dorgu are also missing, and Marcus Rashford is a doubt with a hip issue. The one piece of good news is Kobbie Mainoo, who is back in training after missing four matches.

  • Chelsea are not in much better shape. Xabi Alonso's side went out of the Carabao Cup on penalties at Liverpool on Wednesday, and Maxence Lacroix left that game with a hamstring injury that is likely to keep him out. Reece James is out until the new year after knee surgery, João Pedro has a thigh injury, and Emiliano Martínez and Jamie Gittens remain sidelined. Moisés Caicedo and Malo Gusto played through problems at Anfield and are expected to be assessed.

The big lift for Chelsea is Cole Palmer. He served his one-match ban for the red card against Tottenham in the cup, so he is available Saturday.

That leaves Carrick in a bad spot. Chelsea are banged up, but they have Palmer back and a home crowd, while United have a captain coming back from being dropped and no first-choice striker.

  • Saturday also features Manchester City against Brighton, Tottenham against Crystal Palace and Aston Villa against Fulham. Liverpool host Arsenal on Sunday. The Premier League notes that fixtures are subject to change.
